Christmas Traditions

This year I wanted to have matching pajamas.  A  sweet friend, Jenica made these for us and I just LOVE them!!  The ladies have a glittery nose and a rhinestone blinged out bow!  Could they get any cuter!?!  They were a big hit!  Christopher still (in late January) wants us all to wear our matching ‘moose’ jammies!  ;)

As we build our holiday traditions with our family, I have three favorites that we do each year.  First, is that we attend People’s Church Christmas Eve Service.  It’s a beautiful service and we always get to visit with old friends we love so dearly.  This year our church had our own service and right after we headed over to People’s, it’s is that special.

When we come home that evening, we get the kids to bed and get ready for the next day.  A longtime favorite tradition on my side of the family is homemade eggnog.  You have to start this recipe the night before.  SOOOO many calories, but I DON’T count when it’s the holidays.  (Well, I really don’t count when it’s not either.)

Then my last and sweetest tradition has become the party!  While Christopher is sleeping, we blow up a bunch of balloons and fill his bedroom, the hallway and around the tree for the big birthday party!!!… after all, its really about the gift of Jesus isn’t it!!!

What are your traditions?

Christopher’s Christmas Tree

I know we’re almost half way through the new year (well at least it feels that way for me), but this is more for my own feeling of accomplishment, rather than timely posts – maybe one day I’ll catch up to myself.

_______________________________________

This year, I had the privilege and opportunity to decorate The Fairwinds; a very classy retirement home in North Fresno, where I used to work as the Activities  Director.  (Yes, I got to plan parties for Senior Citizens – AND IT WAS MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE JOB TOO).  So 4 trees, balcony garland, fireplaces and nooks and crannies decorated, this year the Shabaglian home got leftovers!

A little worried about what I had to work with, I resolved in my heart (also justifying what could be a potentially crappy looking tree) that for this year, Christopher could choose the decorations!

So with our mix of gold, silver, champagne, red AND turquoise (a few black glitter  feathers I was able to convince the 3′ tall designer were best in the back of the tree), I was surprised and happy to say that we didn’t do half bad!

The Decorator inspecting his work.

Symphony's first Christmas tree - it was very fascinating...

This was our favorite ornament all season!

Christopher's 2011 Ornament of course made it onto the tree. Crush and Offspring! ;)

Not too bad. I realize I cut off the top which was a very large gold glitter star with two golf glitter feathers on either side... to look like a bull horns???

And just for fun, because I love her!

Turkey Indulgence

Thanksgiving 2011 was filled with, like always, a grateful fragrance in the air, lots of great family and friends and way too many calories to care about; because it’s ALL worth it!

I unfortunately didn’t get any pictures of the Penner Thanksgiving, but our cousin Allie did and she did a great post you can see here.

Now for the spirit of Christmas… may your season be mErrY and BrIGhT!!

Fall Frenzy!

Fall is definitely my favorite season!  I love the weather, I love the feeling that it brings of warmth, family, home and comfort.  Changing from an iced coffee to a warm mug, making more soups than salads, wearing jeans and light sweaters over tank tops and flip flops (maybe still the flip flops), that’s my kinda season!  Now having little ones, we take advantage of the special things that fall brings.  And we are so thankful to have such great family in town to do life with!  (and for those who visit.)

This day, was just our little family of four.  The kids were fighting colds and we had a late night at the Lecrae concert, so we got a late start, but God was so good to us all throughout the day!  I am truly in love with this little family of four.

And God Said “Yes”

If you remember back a month or so ago, I invited you to join me on an unknown journey?  It was my journey for justice.  You can read that post HERE.  In reading the Book “Just Courage”, I was reawakened to an idea I had about eight years ago.  I had been wrestling with it in a fresh way since picking up this book.

How do I gain knowledge about such horrible acts of injustice to human beings and not try to make a difference?  How do I see it all over scripture, God’s call to justice and setting the oppressed free, and not do something eternal?  Do I just send my measly check, and commit to keep them in prayer?  I knew that for me, there was something more.

For eight years, I have held a vision in my heart and over time, I saw God sharpening and fine tuning it.  EXACLY, three weeks to the day, I woke up to ask Jon to really just stop and pray with me about it all, because we really hadn’t.  Then at that moment, God said to me, Why don’t you ask Me?”  Convicted right.  Here I had been “asking” God as I went about my day and kept rambling all the pros and cons in my head, but I never really stopped and got on my face to listen.

So at that moment, I crawled back onto my bed, got on my knees and asked God, and He instantly said, “Yes”.  And so what is it you ask, that God said yes to?  A non-profit.  Without many details, I am going to start a non-profit to funnel funds to anti-human trafficking and social justice causes.

So in three weeks, I have the name trade marked, papers sent to the state of California, have an attorney, a staff person to help and many other open doors that I am so confident and excited in this endeavor.

This organization is not for me to make money, but for me to raise funds and funnel to organizations who are on the ground doing the real work.  To start, the team will be made up of all volunteers and donated time and services.  I hope to share more with you in a few weeks.  Until then, if you are a praying person, I would appreciate prayers for the right Board, the right Team, God to remain the center and of course the always present start-up funds.

Still on the journey,

Andrea Marie   XOXO

A Man of Excellence – Pastor G.L. Johnson

A Pillar in the community.  The Pastor’s Pastor.  The City’s Pastor.  I felt privileged to attend the memorial service of such a great leader, husband, father, servant, visionary, missionary, in all … a great man of God.

People’s church was my first church, I find it to be very true that it was coined for so long as … ‘A Place Called Home.”  And like visiting homes and stomping grounds I grew up in as a kid, it has a part of me and I have a part of it.  No matter how long I have been absent from worshiping there, there is a piece of me that fits right in and feels comfortable when I visit …just like home.  To loose Pastor Johnson is a great loss in so many ways.

This was a cherished piece that we all got to go home with, at the back of the program a copy of his Bible with his markings on his favorite scripture, along with his famous words often used at the end of his sermons.

I was amazed and encouraged last time I saw him speak.  He was our guest of honor in March for our Church’s 5-year anniversary, and I remember watching him write notes as the other speakers spoke.  With sincere interest and what seemed like new revelations, he wrote down his thoughts.  This to me was inspiring.  A man 80+ years, retired already from the “pulpit” serving as a Senior Pastor, still passionate .

Three qualities I pray I can emulate …

1.  Pastor Johnson knew your name.  As said more than once throughout his service, because it was a strong uncommon quality we all admire(d).  Yes, not just mine, or Jon’s or the Pastoral staff, or the ushers, etc.  he must have known THOUSANDS of names.  And thousands throughout the world.  This quality is of high admiration.  Like Jesus, Pastor G.L. knew our names, maybe not the number of hairs on our head, but he valued people and he knew how it made us feel to be called by first name or to be called a friend.

2.  Pastor Johnson knew how to have fun.  Being a pastor’s wife, I know that there are whirlwinds, sometime the ugliest of tornados you’ve ever seen that go on behind the scenes of a message from the pulpit on a Sunday.  We people are a messy bunch.  So I know it’s not all glamourous, but being privy to a few of the stories that my Senior Pastor got to share in mission trips with Pastor G.L. across the world, it is fun to hear that such a highly respected man, who could be serious about God, also knew how to have fun in the life God gave him.  We all knew his sense of humor through his sermons, but to hear some real life stories of his fun side, makes him just that much more lovable.

3.  Pastor Johnson was a man of Excellence.  This was the quality about him that I admired, probably equally to knowing everyone’s names.  For a year or so I worked in the nursery at People’s church as a paid position.  I received my “Employee Handbook” and there is one thing that has always stuck with me.  There was a section, I don’t know if it was just for the Pastoral Staff or all Full time staff, but I knew I was exempt (phew – I was in my late teens early twenties), but it was required that you kept an almost immaculate car.  YES – You heard me correct, car!  This had nothing to do with rules and regulations on serving the church, or appropriate dress code, or conduct between a male and a female.  It was a minor detail in life that not many people would even see, but it represents that spirit of excellence in every area of our life.  Someone said at his service, that Pastor G.L. Johnson did everything with a spirit of excellence, and that he did.  He lived his life well, showed us excellent examples to follow, and served his generation and then went home.

Rhonda Temple wrote a PERFECT and moving piece as well as did the voice over for what was the highlight of the service for me, take a look ….

As the service ended Jackie (Johnson) was escorted out down the long aisle with what she deserved …a standing ovation.  Pastor Johnson’s fruit will continue to bear and I hope in the future mine would as well.

I covet his example to us all…. now off to clean my car!! (And remember the name of the guy who washes it!)

Happy 4th from our Family to Yours!

“Freedom is nothing else but a chance to be better.”  ~Albert Camus

This 4th of July as we prayed with our kids we were reminded of the freedoms we have…  the freedom to worship Jesus Christ especially, and how too many of our brothers and sisters in the Lord do not have this luxury as we do in America, and how vain we are for taking it for granted.  I pray the Lord will only help us to raise our children with grateful and humble hearts.

I enjoy holidays as it causes a great excuse to be with friends and family!  This year we did a lot of party hopping.  Though our pictures were slim, we were filled this holiday weekend with lots of friends, family, food, lots of swimming and great bonding time… Thank you Gulke’s, Holland’s & Wagner’s, Hutton’s and the Smittcamps, we love all of you!

My first attempt at an over-the-top bow for our princess!

You Know It …Sha’mon!!

That’s right folks – Michael lives on!!!

Last Saturday was the two year anniversary of one of my generations greatest icons – MJ.  And it so happens that in the family are a few serious fans.  So a few of us wives decided to surprise our husbands and go see an impersonator up at Chuckchansi – and it was beyond our expectations!!!!

Parts of me have this satisfaction like I have actually seen MJ in person now.  This impersonator did at least a dozen outfit changes and managed to capture most of his legendary poses or moves.  He was amazing and we had a blast!!

Nothing like some MJ and family bonding time!  Then we had dinner and planned our holidays!  ;)

How we Celebrate Jon on Father’s Day

As you may have gathered about me, I am sentimental, and love captured moments.  So when we celebrated father’s day for the first time with Christopher, I wanted it to be something that was special and lasting.

So, Father’s day has now become like Christmas week for me.  You know, the last minute shopping and wrapping, etc.?  The week leading up to Father’s Day I start to select, edit and pint multiple pictures to create two 12″x12″ scrapbook pages and try to capture the best moments of the past year, in the “Daddy and Me” book.  And Jon is then presented with the book and his new pages… with one space on each page to add a picture from that day.  Remember this now has to be done during naps, everything pulled out and put back before Dad comes home or kids get up.  Hence the hectic Christmas sensations.

And now… there are 2 books!!  So here is a sneak peak into the past few years.

Christopher’s Album

Symphony’s Album

Every year I do this, a few tears well up at how fast life goes and how special our life is with children.

(Cramming a full year of special moments in only two 12″x12″ pages, is not an easy task by the way, but so worth it when it’s completed.)
